SM-J1 Premium Dual-Element Desktop Microphone

The Icom SM-J1 is a high-quality desktop microphone developed specifically for amateur radio use. Its two dynamic microphone elements provide a balanced frequency response and transmit the operator’s voice with a clear, natural and full-bodied sound. At the same time, the dual-element design reduces the effects of strong low-frequency air-pressure fluctuations. This allows the operator to speak very close to the microphone without breath and plosive noises unnecessarily affecting the transmission.

A polar-pattern selector switch allows the pickup characteristics to be adapted to the respective operating situation. In unidirectional mode, the SM-J1 primarily picks up sound from the front while reducing noise outside the main pickup area. Omnidirectional mode, by contrast, provides consistent pickup from different directions and allows greater freedom of movement in front of the microphone. This enables the SM-J1 to be configured specifically for normal station operation as well as DX contacts, pile-ups and contests.

An integrated manufacturer selector allows the microphone to be used with compatible transceivers from Icom, Alinco and JVC KENWOOD. Jointly developed by member companies of the Japan Amateur Radio Industries Association (JAIA), the SM-J1 is one of the first high-quality amateur radio accessories designed around cross-manufacturer compatibility.

The sturdy desktop base, adjustable microphone arm and integrated controls provide convenient operation directly at the station. Available controls include a PTT button, a PTT locking function (LOCK), UP/DOWN buttons and four function buttons (F1–F4).

For an individually configured installation, the microphone can be removed from the desktop base and attached to a compatible microphone arm using its standard 5/8-inch thread. This allows the microphone to be positioned ergonomically while also isolating it from vibrations transmitted through the desktop. An additional footswitch connection enables hands-free PTT operation. During contests in particular, this keeps both hands free for operating the transceiver, keyboard and logging software.

Icom lists the SM-J1 as compatible with the IC-7760, IC-7610, IC-7300MK2, IC-7300, IC-9700 and IC-718, among others.
