The BL-49 is a balun with a transmission ratio of 1:49, which is particularly suitable for building end-fed half-wave antennas (aka End fed Half Wave, EFHW).
The balun is built with a large and powerful toroidal core, allowing up to 600 W PEP (450 W CW, 100 W Data) over the entire shortwave range (1.8 - 30 MHz). The housing is waterproof and has a valve to drain off unavoidable condensation. The valve prevents insects from using the interior as a nesting place. A suspension is provided at the top of the balun housing so that the antenna wire does not have to carry the relatively heavy balun as well.
End-fed half-wave antennas (EFHW) are very popular because they are easy to hang. With such a 1:49 balun, one can realise different designs for an EFHW antenna, for example mono-band or also multi-band antennas for the bands that are resonant to each other.
The radiation of an EFHW antenna is similar to that of a dipole. The antenna can be suspended as a sloper, angled as an inverted-V or inverted-L, or straight and parallel to the ground.
